The Royal Victoria Marathon's biggest hill starts at kilometre 36.4

Victoria is described everywhere as a gently undulating seaside course, and that is true. It is also a course that gains 247 metres across twenty separate climbs, saves its largest one for kilometre 36.4, and gives you nowhere flat to hide in between. Here is the whole thing, measured.

The four climbs that need a plan

The one that decides the race km 36.4 – 38.7 · +20.2 m

A 2.3 km drag from the seafront back up toward Dallas @ Douglas — the largest single climb on the course, arriving exactly where the glycogen doesn't. It averages 0.9%, which is the trap: too shallow to read as a hill, long enough to hurt, at the worst possible kilometre. Everything after km 38.7 is downhill or flat to the line, so whatever you have left, spend it here and not before.

The steepest thing in the race km 6.1 – 7.0 · +16.2 m

Sixteen metres in 900 m, touching 4.4% — the sharpest sustained pitch on the course. It comes early, while you are fresh and the field is still dense, which is precisely when runners overspend. Let people go.

The one at the transition km 28.5 – 29.5 · +15.8 m

The second steepest climb, up to 4.3%, landing right where a marathon stops being a long run and starts being a race. Nothing about it is dramatic; it simply arrives at the moment you have least to give it.

The opener km 1.1 – 2.9 · +16.4 m

Sixteen metres of climbing inside the first three kilometres, before you are warm and while adrenaline is at its highest. The classic Victoria mistake is banking time here and paying for it at 36.

Every split takes between 21 and 36 m. There is no easy stretch and no brutal one — which is the whole character of the course.

What it means if you are racing it

These are rollers, not hills. There is no climb on this course that needs hill training in the strength sense, and no descent long enough to cause real quad damage. If you are choosing what to train in the last weeks before Victoria, hill repeats are answering a question the course does not ask.

The real cost is rhythm. Twenty grade changes, spread evenly, mean a runner holding a fixed pace surges twenty times, while a runner holding a fixed effort gives back a few seconds on each rise and takes them straight back on the fall. Across 42 km that difference is most of the race.

If there is one course-specific session worth doing, it is a long run with a gentle two kilometre rise placed at around 36 km of accumulated fatigue. Not steep — just late. Knowing what that feels like is worth more than any hill workout.

Where these numbers come from

The course is the official Ride with GPS route linked from the race's own marathon page — 1,334 points at roughly 32 m spacing, stated distance 42,196.1 m.

The elevation in that file is broken. 366 of its 1,334 points are zero, including one unbroken run covering km 37.2 to the finish and another at km 7.3–9.2. Any gain figure computed straight from it — Ride with GPS reports 181.8 m — understates the course. Every elevation on this page is instead true ground elevation, sampled from a public digital elevation model at all 1,334 points.

Three independent sources agree on the result: our DEM analysis gives +247 m over a 3–29 m range; findmymarathon gives 240 m; the race's own elevation and grade profile gives 770 ft (≈235 m) over 3–25 m. The DEM peaks also land on the official profile's labelled spot heights — Douglas @ Battery tops at exactly 27 m at km 7 on both, independently.

One source we discarded: an algorithmically generated race-difficulty page rating Victoria "very difficult, harder than 90% of marathons" and describing its surface as trail — "dirt, gravel and forest paths". Victoria is a paved seaside road marathon. When a page is wrong about the one fact anybody can check by looking, its other numbers are not worth carrying.
